Singapore-born composer, Lim Yi Benjamin is a recipient of the prestigious 2013 National Arts Council Scholarship (Postgraduate), Composer-in-residence of the TENG Ensemble and an Executive Committee Member of the Singapore Chinese Music Federation.
A BA (Hons) Music graduate from the National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University, he graduated with top honours and was awarded The Association of Nanyang University Graduates Gold Medal and The NIE Award.
Lim Yi is equally adept at composing for acoustic instruments or in an electronic medium, and his works have been commissioned and performed by many local music groups. His film works include soundtracks for the short films ‘Threshold‘ (Dir. Loo Zihan), ‘Kitchen Quartet‘ (Nicole Midori Woodford), ‘Frail Line’ (Dir. Er Kia Hui), ‘In the House of Straw‘ (Chris Yeo) and the title theme to Wee Li Lin’s ‘FOREVER’.
He has also composed for groups such as T.H.E Dance Company, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Singapore Lyric Opera Children’s Choir, MOE Co-Curricular Activities Branch, re:mix String Orchestra, The Sing Song Club, Dingyi Music Company, Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra (Taiwan) and Oxley String Quartet, among others.
Lim Yi studied composition under Dr Zechariah Goh Toh Chai (Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts), Dr Kelly Tang (NIE) and Dr Wang Dan Hong (Central Chinese Orchestra of China). He is currently pursuing a Masters in Music in Composition at the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing under the tutelage of Prof Tang Jian Ping.
