Prof Wei was formerly the head and associate professor at the plucked string instrument teaching division of the Tianjin Conservatory of Music (TJCM); council member of the Chinese Society of Yangqin Education; art director for the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) City Chinese Orchestra; and conductor for the National University of Singapore (NUS) Chinese Orchestra. He is now a visiting professor at the TJCM; visiting professor at the Tianjin Normal University; Yangqin instructor at NAFA; level examination editor for Chinese orchestra at NUS; council member of the Singapore Chinese Music Federation; chairman of the Singapore Society of Yangqin; conductor for the Chinese orchestras of Hwa Chong Junior College, Catholic High School and many other orchestras.
Prof Wei has groomed numerous exceptional professional talents. His thesis was honoured by the conservatory for excellent teaching results. The Yangqin teaching materials he wrote, his compositions as well as new techniques and symbols that he invented have also won him awards for excellence. He was often invited to judge in competitions as well as give lectures and host music events abroad. He was the conductor for the Ministry of Education’s National Chinese Orchestra Music Camp for several years. He also led Hwa Chong Junior College, Dunman, Raffles and Nanyang Girls’ High School and Catholic High School to bag gold awards, among which Hwa Chong Junior College earned the top spot several times as well as gold with honours. Many of his students went on to win awards in music competitions. “Rasa Sayang”, the ensemble he co-wrote, was a popular number performed by orchestras in Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, mainland China and Malaysia. His achievements are documented in the “Who’s Who of Chinese Experts”.
